Anthony Bennett Dealing With Inflamed Nerves In Left Shoulder

Feb 28, 2013 8:21 PM

Anthony Bennett is listed as day-to-day with nerve inflammation in his left shoulder.

“Right now we’re treating him as having brachial neuritis, which is exactly inflammation of the nerve group coming off your neck to the shoulder,” said UNLV team trainer Dave Tomchek.

Bennett underwent both an MRI and ultrasound and will be re-evaluated prior to the Runnin’ Rebels’ Saturday afternoon game against Nevada.

“We’ve determined there’s no structural damage in the shoulder; we’re taking care of the nerve and it’s going to be a day-to-day situation,” Tomchek said. “He’ll get treatment and proceed with activity as pain allows him. There’s no timetable as to when this is going to be completely gone.”

Wiggins' Official Visit To Kentucky Begins Wednesday

Feb 26, 2013 1:19 PM

Andrew Wiggins will arrive in Lexington for his official visit at Kentucky on Wednesday.

Wiggins will visit Kansas and North Carolina next week.

Wiggins has narrowed his choices down to Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina and Florida State. Wiggins visited Florida State in December.

Wiggins attended Big Blue Madness last season, as well as that season's North Carolina game.

"He's excited, and he doesn't care who they're playing," Huntington Prep Coach Rob Fulford told the Herald-Leader. "I know it's probably not the greatest game in the world for Kentucky. But he was at the Carolina game last year, so he's seen the atmosphere when it's at its highest."

Wiggins will be accompanied by his parents, who are coming down from Canada for the visit.

Krzyzewski Still Hasn't Changed Mind On Team USA

Feb 26, 2013 11:46 AM

Team USA continues to hope that Mike Krzyzewski changes his mind and returns as head coach.

But Krzyzewski reiterated again on Tuesday that he has moved on entirely and wants to focus on coaching Duke.

Krzyzewski coached Team USA to their Gold Medal wins in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, along with Gold at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and 2007 FIBA Americas Championship. Krzyzewski's one blight was a Bronze at the 2006 FIBA World Championship.

Boeheim To Reporter: Go Get Your Pulitzer Someplace Else

Feb 25, 2013 11:14 PM

The coaching moves of Jim Boeheim were questioned by the media following Syracuse's second straight loss, a 74-71 decision to Marquette.

Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports asked the question that elicited the response.

"You ought to know by now that if you start to ask me those questions, I'll just laugh at you," Boeheim said. "Go get your Pulitzer someplace else."

Boeheim called ESPN's Andy Katz an idiot and disloyal person during a press conference less than two weeks ago.

Akron Credits LeBron For His Role In School's Success

Feb 25, 2013 2:52 PM

The Akron Zips have the longest winning streak in college basketball with 18 straight victories.

Keith Dambrot, who coached LeBron James James at St. Vincent-St. Mary, has been at Akron since 2004.

"They're on an unbelievable streak right now," James said. "One thing about coach (Dambrot) is he maximizes talent that he has by putting that belief in guys who may not feel like they can do some of the things they can do. That's always something he did while we were in high school. He's unbelievable with them."

"Listen, our program would not be what it is today if it wasn't for LeBron James," said Dambrot. "When I walk into recruits' homes and they know I coached LeBron, they trust I know what I'm talking about. He plays in the summer at Akron, he was here a ton during the (NBA) lockout. And there's no question LeBron helped me become a better coach. I always held him to the highest standard, and I still do today."

Cal AD Calls Montgomery's Shove Of Crabbe 'Unacceptable'

Feb 18, 2013 10:24 AM

Cal head coach Mike Montgomery viscously shoved Allen Crabbe during a second half timeout in the team's 76-68 win over USC on Sunday.

"It worked, didn't it?" said Montgomery with a laugh before saying that he would do it again.

In a statement later, Montgomery said, "I have great passion for this game and tonight, I let my emotions get away from me in the heat of the moment. While my intent was to motivate our student-athletes, my behavior was inappropriate and I apologize for my actions."

Barbour's full statement:

"Sunday's game was an emotional one for everyone who cares deeply about our men's basketball program, and the Bears certainly showed tremendous resolve coming back to earn a win over USC. However, it is unacceptable for our coaches to have physical contact with student-athletes regardless of the circumstances. The second-half incident was certainly out of character for Mike Montgomery, and I am confident that something like this will not happen again."

Crabbe spent a few minutes in a tunnel near the Cal bench before being reinserted in the game.

"Just spur of the moment," Crabbe said. "It was a emotional game at the time. He was trying to motivate me. Everything's fine. It's under the bridge. He's my coach."

Noel's Brother Expects Him To Declare

Feb 15, 2013 3:55 PM

Nerlens Noel tore his ACL on Tuesday, which was discovered with an MRI on Wednesday.

"I'd be surprised if he comes back," his brother Rodman Noel said on Wednesday. "Right now people still say he'll be a top-five pick. It would only be smart to take it while you can."

Noel's rehab is expected to take six to eight months.

"What devastated him more than anything else was not being able to finish out the season," Rodman said. "Especially being his first year of college. He really wanted to play in the NCAA tournament."
